Septic tank interior
Interior of an empty built-in concrete 2000 gallon septic tank, for collection and treating domestic sewage in the UK. The tank at the top of the picture is the first chamber into which waste water enters, with solids settling in the bottom, and scum floating to the surface. The solids are anaerobically digested, with the liquids flowing through the pipe in the dividing wall to the second chamber, where further settlement leaves the remaining water relatively clean, to be drained into the soakaway or drain field through the pipe at the bottom of the picture.
