A scanned image of a human eye, as part of an iris recognition research programme by John Daugman at the University of Cambridge. The detailed pattern of the iris is converted by a specially written algorithm into a coded map which enables rapid comparison with a database even when the iris which is being scanned is dilated or contracted. The inset panel contains coding elements used in the algorithm.
