Silica nano-wire fibre (SEM)
Scanning electron microscope image of silica nanofibres, or nanowires, with diameters less than 500 nm (courtesy of Gilberto Brambilla). The fibre shown here has a diameter of approximately 220nm or 0.00022mm. It is believed that, uniquely, the fibres' strength increases as the diameter decreases. These fibres are expected to have important applications within composite materials used in, for instance, aircraft technology and other fields where the unique weight to strength properties combined with a high degree of flexibility are important.
