First astronomical telescope replica
A ‘best guess’ reproduction of the 6x magnification 'Dutch Trunke' telescope built by Thomas Hariot and used in 1609 to make his first maps of the surface of the moon, which were dated several months before Galileo Galilei made his observations of Jupiter. Whilst there is almost no information on the actual telescope Hariot used, the instrument illustrated which is held by a model dressed in clothing appropriate to the period, is built based on the best information about telescope construction at the time. The square tube, of oak, is based on a contemporary reference to it being 'like a flute case' and Hariot himself called it a Dutch 'Trunke' i.e. a box or coffer. The replica was made by Mike Tabb in Bath, UK.
