Bowel cancer sceening technician checking test kit
A technician at the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Centre checks a test kit for faecal occult (hidden) blood, which would indicate the development of polyps or cancer within the bowel. The kit relies on the reaction of blood with guaiac extract in the prescence of hydroge peroxide, when blood traces turn blue. Such positive results would trigger an invitation for further tests.
