Reading bar-code on specimens in guaiac testing for faecal occult blood in large scale screening programme.
Using a bar-code reader to access a database of participants in a large-scale bowel cancer screening programme. The card envelopes contain submitted faecal stains, in pairs of specimens under each of three flaps, which will have reacted with a guaiac impregnated porous layer and which will show the prescence of occult (hidden) blood on being challenged with a hydrogen peroxide reagent. The nationwide screening programme is carried out by the UK National Health Service and bar-codes are necessary to track the large number of participants.
